MILWAUKEE (AP) — The attorney for a former Milwaukee elections official charged with fraudulently ordering three military absentee ballots under fake names and sending them to a Republican lawmaker who embraced election conspiracy theories argued Monday in opening statements that she was a whistleblower and not a criminal. Kimberly Zapata, the former deputy director of the Milwaukee Election Commission, is on trial for misconduct in public office, a felony, and three misdemeanor counts of making a false statement to obtain an absentee ballot. In Milwaukee County Circuit Court, Zapata's defense attorney Daniel Adams told the jury that she committed no crime, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported. Researchers who study political nonprofits say that the Searle trust has had a major impact, even as the Searle family has stayed under the radar compared to more well-known conservative benefactors. The Searle trust is one of the most prolific funders of conservative groups among all private foundations, according to a CNN analysis of nonprofit tax data. The Searle trust has given millions to the Foundation for Government Accountability, which has worked behind the scenes to push conservative policies such as stricter voting laws. CNN —Authorities are investigating after Donald Trump Jr. on Monday opened a letter with unidentified white powder at his Florida home. Trump Jr., a high-profile surrogate for his father’s presidential campaign, recently made headlines when he appeared as part of the New York attorney general’s civil fraud case. Trump, his brother Eric Trump, his father and two former Trump Organization officials have appealed the $464 million judgment entered against them. In 2018, Trump Jr.’s then-wife Vanessa Trump opened a letter addressed to Trump Jr. containing a suspicious substance, which the New York Police Department ultimately deemed nonhazardous.
